About The Artist

Kaye McFadyen is a contemporary Scottish painter whose work is inspired by the ever-changing coastlines and islands of Scotland’s west coast. Working predominantly in oil on canvas, her paintings explore the embodied experience of weather, light, sea and wind, creating atmospheric responses to place rather than descriptions of the landscape.

Beginning with long walks along the shoreline, plein air sketches and the collection of natural objects, her practice develops through observation, memory and reflection in the studio. Layers of colour and expressive mark-making transform these experiences into paintings that evoke the shifting relationship between land, sea, sky and atmosphere.

While inspired by many of Scotland’s islands, including Uist, Skye, Arran and Bute, it is the landscapes of Harris and Lewis that have profoundly shaped the recent direction of her practice. Rather than depicting a specific location, each painting seeks to convey the emotional and physical experience of standing within these elemental environments.
